    Default Eating in the marketplace

    EATING IN THE MARKETPLACE

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah radiallahu anhu has narrated that, The Beneficent and the Benevolent Prophet Rasulullah sallalahu alaihi wasallam has stated that, It is despicable to eat in the marketplace. (Al-Jamius-Sagir, pp. 184, Hadis. 3073)

Maulana Mufti Muhammad Amjad Ali Aazami has stated, It is Makruh [disliked] to eat on the road or in the marketplace. (Bahar-e-Shariat, pp. 19, part. 16)

    BREAD FROM THE MARKET

Sayyiduna Imam Burhan-ud-Din Ibrahim Zarnuji has stated, Sayyiduna Imam Muhammad bin Fadal Rahmatullahi Allaih never ate food from the market while he was seeking his education. Every Friday, his father would bring food for him from the village. Once, his father brought some food and noticed that the bread in his sons room was from the marketplace. He was very upset with his son because of this, and refused to speak to his son due to anger. His son apologetically replied that he had not bought the bread, but that one of his friends had bought the bread without his permission. After hearing this, his father rebuked him and said, If you had been pious [taqwa], your friend would never have dared to do this. (Talim-ul-Mutaallim, p. 67)

THERE IS NO BLESSING IN THE FOOD FROM THE MARKETPLACE

Did you see how strictly our pious predecessors would adhere to asceticism [taqwa], and how meticulous they were in educating their children so much so that they would not let their children eat food from the restaurant and marketplace? Sayyiduna Imam Zarnuji Rahmatullahi Allaih has stated, if it is possible, one should refrain, from nonbeneficial food and food from a market, because that food will take one closer to filth and fraud [khiyanat], and distance one from the Zikr of Allah azwajal. The reason for this is that since this food catches an eye (attracts attention) of the poor and destitute and as these poor people cannot afford this food, they are disheartened, which further results in the deprivation of blessings [barakah] from the food. (Talim-ul-Mutaallim, p. 88)

IS IT APPROPRIATE TO EAT AT RESTAURANTS?

Those who are in the habit of eating at restaurants relishing fancy and delicious cuisine should indeed learn from the parable above. If eating at a the marketplace is despised, then how despicable would it be to eat and drink in restaurants where there is a prevalence of music and various other irreligious, sinful activities. Regardless of whether music is played or not, the ambience in the restaurants generally promotes heedlessness. It is a demeaning environment for nobles and righteous in society. If one is in dire need of food and finds no other alternative venue other than the restaurant, then one should purchase the food and eat at a private place. However, a person who is helpless [majbur] is certainly excused [mazur].

IT IS NOT SUNNAH TO EAT ON A DINING TABLE

Sayyiduna Anas radiallahu anhu has stated that The Splendid and The Dignified Prophet sallalahu alaihi wasallam did not eat on a table, nor did he eat in small bowls, [furthermore,] thin bread was not prepared for him. When Sayyiduna Qatadah radiallahu anhu was asked asto what they would eat on; he radiallahu anhu replied that they ate on a dining-mat. (Sahih Bukhari, pp. 532, vol. 3, Hadis. 5415)

    The Dangers of Pizza

Pizza and other oily fast foods sold in the market place quickly cause fatness and obesity. These items are very dangerous to ones health. In fast foods, inferior quality ingredients and, at times, very stale ingredients are used. In summer, these cooked stale foods develop fungus and germs, which gives rise to the danger of severe food poisoning or even death. In Arab Emirates where the quality of hotel food is considered to be very high, a critical article was published in the newspaper Khalij Times on 14th August 2004 which severely criticised fast food, especially pizza and other oily foods served in the hotels in the capital Abu Dhabi. According to the article, almost three or four such patients who have food poisoning as a result of eating pizza etc. are being admitted in most of the hospitals and clinics of Abu Dhabi every week.

These patients have vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion, fever, weakness and extreme laziness. One doctor reports that three such patients who ate pizza visited him last week. One of the patients had to be hospitalized for two days. There are also other doctors who had presented their reports in this specific article and all concluded that, Consuming pizzas and other market fast foods is tantamount to inviting diseases.

Dear Islamic brothers & sisters! Use of fast foods, pizzas and other fried foods increases the cholesterol level in blood. High cholesterol levels harden and narrow blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart problems. If a patient is in the habit of smoking and has diabetes, there is a high risk of him suffering from stroke or a heart attack. If one wants to have a healthy body, it is quite important to consume fresh and simple food and maintain proper body-weight as it assists in reducing cholesterol levels and obesity.
