Default Rafael Nadal set to begin defence under cover

Rafael Nadal is set to become the first player to begin the defence of his Wimbledon crown under the roof as rain threatens to disrupt the start of the grass-court slam.

With heavy rain forecast for Monday, it could be a frustrating day for players and fans alike on the outside courts, but Nadal will be assured of his one o'clock start, thanks to the £80m retractable roof on Centre Court.

The world No. 1 opens proceedings on Centre Court against American Michael Russell, followed by Francesca Schiavone versus Jelena Dokic. Home favourite Andy Murray is third on court for his opening-round match against Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

The roof was completed in time for the 2009 championships, but organisers are yet to see their investment repaid with glorious weather limiting the use of the new translucent roof.

Murray's fourth-round clash against Stanislas Wawrinka in 2009 was the first match to start and finish under the roof, and so it will not be a nasty surprise for the Scot if he has to start his Wimbledon tilt under cover.

"It's more humid. It slows the conditions down and the balls become heavier," Murray said.

However for some players, namely six-time champion Roger Federer, the roof will be an unknown quantity.

"In Halle I got the opportunity to play in some of the grass court matches under the roof," Federer said. "But then again, Wimbledon is a different centre court, so definitely will take some getting used to in the beginning.

"It will be interesting to see. I honestly thought it was going to be a bit of a rainy Wimbledon this year. The spring was just too nice all over Europe it seems."

If it is raining 45 minutes before play is scheduled to start on Monday, the tournament referee is likely to employ the roof, which takes 10 minutes to close, in order to begin the 125th edition of The Championships on time.
