Heather Watson suffers humbling defeat
Heather Watson experienced defeat in the second qualifying round of the New Haven Open, a setback to her US Open preparations.
The Guernsey girl defeated Misaki Doi on Friday to kick off her preparations for the final grand slam of the year, but will now have to ramp her work in practice after being thumped 6-1 6-1 by Czech Petra Cetkovska.
In a match that lasted six seconds short of an hour, Watson managed to win just two service games as her opponent was able to break with abandon - particularly feasting on the 19-year-old's second serve, winning 72 per cent of those points.
And it is the serve that Watson will have to work on if she is to make an impact at Flushing Meadows, having been handed passage into the main draw by organisers.
