Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez have been ruled out of Manchester United's Champions League clash against FC Basel on Tuesday.

Rooney was left out of United's 1-1 draw with Stoke after suffering a hamstring injury, while Hernandez missed training after picking up a dead leg at the Britannia Stadium.

That leaves Michael Owen, Dimitar Berbatov and fit-again Danny Welbeck in the frame to start up front, while Sir Alex Ferguson also has defensive concerns after Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Nemanja Vidic all missed training on Monday.

Evans has an ankle injury, Smalling a groin problem and Vidic a calf injury, meaning Rio Ferdinand is likely to start alongside Phil Jones, with Antonio Valencia expected to cover at right back for the injured Rafael.

United drew their opening match with Benfica in Lisbon a fortnight ago, while Basel are group leaders after defeating Romanian side Otelul Galati in their first game.
