Rooney sights set on Newcastle
Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful Wayne Rooney will be cleared to face Newcastle at the weekend, insisting the forward simply ran out of time to be fit for Manchester United's Champions League clash with Benfica.
Rooney took a knock on the hip during the win over Swansea and with the blow right on the bone, it was too sore to take on the Portuguese side.
Ferguson, who fielded Dimitar Berbatov in Rooney's place against Benfica, feels the problem is a minor one.
"We gave him every chance, but it was just beyond," Ferguson told Sky Sports ahead of the game with Benfica. "It was too painful.
"He got a knock on his hip and it is right on the bone, so there was not enough time to recover. We gave him every chance."
Rooney will now train his sights on Saturday's clash with Newcastle, a side he has netted 10 career goals against.
