Gerrard, 31, came off the bench on Friday to help Liverpool to a much-needed home victory as they saw off Newcastle United 3-1 at Anfield to lift them to fifth in the table.

The Reds are next in action on January 3 when they travel to City, who are in action on New Year's eve against Sunderland before their meeting with Liverpool.

And Gerrard is relishing the meeting, having seen his team earn a 1-1 draw with Roberto Mancini's men on Merseyside in November, the Reds denied victory late on following a fine save from goalkeeper Joe Hart.

"They are a fantastic team who have started the season really well but we've got nothing to fear," Gerrard told

"We showed against them here a couple of weeks ago that we more than matched them. These are exciting games, and these are the games as a player you want to play in. I can't wait.

"We've been very strong on the road. It's at home that we haven't got the results our football has deserved but we will go to City full of confidence. We will give it our best shot and see where it takes us."
