Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy has quashed speculation that in-form striker Steven Fletcher could leave the club in the January transfer window.

Fletcher, 24, has scored five goals in his last eight appearances for Wolves, although the club are still threatened by relegation as they sit a point above the drop zone.

It has been suggested Fletcher's displays could see him targeted by a rival top-flight side, but McCarthy has stressed that any bid would receive a swift rebuke.

He said of the forward, who has been nursing an ankle injury: "There is not a chance of Fletch leaving. If people call, I'd tell them no. He's too valuable for us.

"As regards his fitness, he's got a sore ankle. He rocked it in the FA Cup tie at Birmingham. He didn't train on Monday but he will be okay."
