Van Persie avoids FA charge
Arsenal captain Robin van Persie has escaped punishment for his clash with Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar during the sides' FA Cup fourth-round tie on Sunday.
Villa boss Alex McLeish was angered by the incident, claiming Van Persie had aimed an elbow in the direction of Cuellar and wanted the clash investigated.
But, according to the Football Association, referee Mike Jones reported he had seen the incident at the Emirates. As such the matter has been deemed closed.
Two Van Persie penalties either side of a fortuitous Theo Walcott goal helped the Gunners erase first-half goals from Richard Dunne and Darren Bent and set up a last-16 meeting with Sunderland or Middlesbrough.
The Gunners have had a player banned retrospectively this season, with Alex Song handed a three-match suspension for a stamp on then Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton in August which was not seen by referee Peter Walton.
