Ward topples Golubev in qualifying
James Ward made a fine start in his bid to reach the main draw at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami by beating Andrey Golubev in the first round of qualifying.
The Brit came on court as the second favourite against the No. 24 seed, but he showed no signs of nerves as he powered to a 6-3 6-3 win.
His reward is a clash with No. 1 seed Edouard Roger-Vasselin who was a set to the good when Alexander Kudryavtsev retired. Should Ward come through that he will be in the main draw.
Dan Evans' bid ended in disappointment, as he was beaten 7-6(4) by Bjorn Phau.
