Default West Indies steady in opening session

After two weeks of short-format cricket between these two sides, the first session of the Test series was a study in patience as West Indies crawled to lunch for the loss of one wicket.

Darren Sammy won the toss and chose to bat on a hard pitch free of greenery but the scoring rate wasn't fast and at lunch West Indies were 60 for 1, with Kraigg Brathwaite on 24 and Kirk Edwards on 11.

Brathwaite is renowned as an old-fashioned style of opener, one whose first priority is to take the shine off the ball and for whom scoring is sometimes an afterthought. That was precisely how he played the first session of his first Test at his home ground of Kensington Oval, and by the first break his strike rate was 26.66, while his partners Edwards and Adrian Barath had scored a little more freely.

Brathwaite had been dropped on 10 when he pushed the ball uppishly back to the left of the bowler Peter Siddle, who misjudged the chance and spilled the catch with his left hand. Brathwaite had another nervous moment when he drove at Siddle and sent the ball in the air between Australia's two gullies, and while it was one of only two boundaries he managed in the session it wasn't one he will aim to repeat.

Edwards had picked up two boundaries as well, one with an edge wide of slip and another with a punch on-drive off Ben Hilfenhaus, who swung the ball early. However, the Australians would have hoped to make the West Indies openers play more often against the new ball as a few too many deliveries were allowed to sail through to Matthew Wade, the debutant wicketkeeper.

Ryan Harris collected the only wicket of the session when Barath, on 22 from 54 balls, fell for an obvious plan as the bowler came around the wicket with a short-leg and deep backward square leg in position. The bouncer came and Barath obliged with an attempted hook that flew off the top edge and was easily taken by Siddle at deep backward square leg.

The offspin of Nathan Lyon was introduced early, in the 12th over, but there was little for him in the pitch and the Australians realised it wouldn't be easy to run through the West Indies line-up. They had chosen Harris ahead of the fast bowler James Pattinson, who was named 12th man, while West Indies entered the match without Ravi Rampaul.
