Ivanovic too good for Kuznetsova
Ana Ivanovic booked her passage into round two of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia with a straight-sets win over Svetlana Kuznetsova.
The No. 13 seed has a fine pedigree on clay, having won the French Open in 2008, and she could be a threat to all at Roland Garros later this month.
Ivanovic dropped her serve on two occasions, but she dominated the baseline exchanges and converted all five break points she worked in a 6-4 6-3 win.
Angelique Kerber, the No. 12 seed, battled back from a set down to secure a 4-6 7-5 6-2 win over Anastasia Rodionova, while Shahar Peer progressed after her opponent Shuai Peng retired with the match in the final set.
Julia Goerges is not in the same form as 12 months ago, but she showed her battling skills to see off Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1 6-7(1) 6-3.
Vania King was impressive in beating Tsvetana Pironkova for the loss of one game, while there were wins for Christina McHale, Anabel Medina Garrigues, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Sofia Arvidsson.
