Ferrer matches Federer and Nadal title haul
David Ferrer moved level with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as the most successful player on the ATP Tour this season, winning his fourth title of the year at the UNICEF Open on Sunday.
Ferrer, who boasts more match wins than any rival on the Tour this year, chalked up his 43rd victory against Philipp Petzschner. The world No. 6 gave himself the ideal confidence boost heading into Wimbledon, triumphing 6-3 6-4.
It is the first time Ferrer has picked up four titles in a calendar year, and he still has half the season to play. Playing in his 30th final, he has now won exactly half the showpieces in which he has appeared, lifting a 15th championship title in comfortable fashion.
The first set was nearly all Ferrer as he stormed out to a 5-1 lead, breaking twice against Petzschner, who had entered the tournament as a qualifier. The German had rode a 3-10 record into the competition, but three wins and a walkover booked his place in a third ATP final.
Victory for Petzschner would have seen him become the lowest-ranked player to win a title this season, and the world No. 145 did rally to pull one of the service breaks back, only for Ferrer to serve out for the first set.
In a first meeting between the two players, Ferrer was - as expected - the much more dominant player, creating 12 break chances in the contest, and he accepted another in the second set to wrap up a victory that signals his intent ahead of SW19.
