It is narrated that a miracle occurredbefore his birth proving his Saintship. One day, during the pregnancyof his mother, she wanted to pluck some plums from her neighbour'stree without his permission, but the child in her womb (Hadrat BabaFarid) created a severe pain in her stomach that forced her toabandon the idea of plucking. After a few years after Hadrat BabaFarid’s Rehmatullah Alaih birth, his mother lovingly expressed: “Mydear son, during your confinement I never ate anything which wasunlawful.” Hadrat Baba Farid Rehmatullah Alaih, however, smiled andsaid, “But, my dear mother, you wanted to pluck some plums from ourneighbour's tree without his permission when I had created a severepain in your stomach which saved you from this unlawful act.”
Hadhrat Shaikh Nizam al-Din says thatonce while Hadhrat Shaikh Faridud Deen’s mother was performingSalaat, a thief entered. When he gazed at her, he immediately becameblind. The thief cried out: “I came with the intention of stealingand have become blind. I pledge never to steal again.”

Spiritual Guidance of Khwaja Qutbal-Din Bakhtiar Kaki Rehmatullah Alaih
During his studies, Hadrat KhwajaQutbuddin Baktiar Kaki Rehmatullah Alaih of Delhi visited Multanwhere Hadrat Baba Farid Rehmatullah Alaih became his Murid (disciple)in the Chishtiya Silsila. Upon the instructions of his Pir-o-Murshid,he undertook a tour of Islamic countries, for about 18 years from 593A.H. to 611 A.H. [1196 C.E. to 1214 C.E.] he travelled to Ghazni,Baghdad Sharif, Jerusalem, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Mecca and Medinameeting many great saints and Sufis. After the demise of HadratKhwaja Qutbuddin Rehmatullah Alaih the mantle of spiritual leadershipin the Chishtiyya Silsila fell on the shoulders of Hadrat Baba FaridRehmatullah Alaih when Khwaja Qutbuddin Rehmatullah Alaih nominatedhim to be his Khalifa or spiritual successor. It was he who, in his37 years as head of the silsila, ensured the propagation of Islamthroughout India and the lands beyond.
Journeys and Mujahida
It is narrated that when Hadrat BabaFarid Rehmatullah Alaihvisited Medina Sharif he was spirituallycommanded by the Holy Prophet Sallallaho Alaihi wa Sallam to visitBaghdad Sharif and meet Hadrat Abdul Wahab, son of HadratGhaus-al-Azam Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani Rehmatullah Alaih He was toreceive some sacred relics from him. Accordingly, when he reachedBaghdad Sharif, he received a box from Hadrat Abdul Wahab RehmatullahAlaih which contained the following holy relics: Two flag-poles whichwere used by the Holy Prophet Sallallaho Alaihi wa Sallam in some ofthe battles fought by him; one wooden bowl in which the ProphetSallallaho Alaihi wa Sallam used to eat from; one pair of scissorsand one turban which was used by the holy Prophet Sallallaho Alaihiwa Sallam
Because of political upheavals inDelhi, he was obliged to shift the centre of the Chishtiyya missionfrom Delhi to Ajodhan now known as "Pak Patan". The Khanqahof Baba Farid Rehmatullah Alaih, with his patronage, became a greatuniversity of "moral and spiritual training." Thousands ofaspirants, scholars, dervishes and Sufis reaped benefit from thisspiritual university. Hadrat Baba Farid Rehmatullah Alaih reached thepinnacle of spiritual glory through extremely hard Mujahidas(spiritual striving) to gain mastery over the Nafs.
* Fareed, this world is beautiful, butthere is a thorny garden within it.
* Fareed, do not turn around and strikethose who strike you with their fists.
* Fareed, when there is greed, whatlove can there be? When there is greed, love is false.
Farid Kaaley maindey kaprey, kaalamainda wais,
Gunahan Bharehan main pheraan, Lokkahain dervish
Laden with my load of misdeeds, I moveabout in the garb of black garments. And the people see me and callme a dervish.
Galian chikkar door ghar, naal payareyneouney,
challaan tey bhijjay kambli, rahan tajaaey neouney
My promise with my love, a long way togo and a muddy lane ahead If I move I spoil my cloak; if I stay Ibreak my word.
Once Hadrat Khwaja QutbuddinRehmatullah Alaih ordered Hadrat Baba Farid Rehmatullah Alaih toperform the "Chilla-e-Maakoos" for 40 days. This chilla wasseldom undertaken by Sufis and was one of the most difficult tests ofHadrat Khwaja Baba Farid's Rehmatullah Alaih faith and courage. Itwas to be performed in a well by hanging himself in a reverse orheadlong position with his feet tied up by a rope to a sturdy branchof a treetop.
Once, due to utter weakness, HadratBaba Farid Rehmatullah Alaih helped himself to walk with the aid of astaff. But after a few steps, the colour of his face suddenly becamepurple, as if he was under heavy punishment. He threw away the staff. When Hadrat Khwaja Nizamuddin Rehmatullah Alaih, who was escortinghim, enquired the reason for this, Hadrat Baba Farid RehmatullahAlaih replied, “I wanted to take help of the staff, but Allah’sDispleasure frowned upon me for depending on other’s help insteadof His. I, therefore, threw away the staff and felt highly ashamed ofthis weakness in my faith in Rabb, the Almighty.”
Why Called "Ganj Shakar"?
There are several views for him beingknown by his famous title of Shakar Ganj. When he decided onmujaahadah, his Shaikh advised hunger. He therefore began fasting. After three days a man came and presented some bread. Thinking thisto be by divine direction, he accepted and ate the bread. Within afew moments he became nauseous and vomited out whatever he had eaten. He reported this incident to his Shaikh who said:
“After three days you ate the food ofa drunkard. Shukr unto Allah that the food did not remain in yourstomach. Now remain hungry for another three days and then eat whatcomes from the Ghaib.”
After three days nothing came. He wasovercome by weakness. On account of the extreme hunger he put somepebbles into his mouth. The pebbles turned into sugar. Fearing thatthis may be some deception, he spat it out. A short while later, theextreme hunger again constrained him to put pebbles into his mouth. These too became sugar which he again spat out. This happened againfor a third time. In the morning he reported to his Shaikh who said:“It would have been good if you had ate it.” Since that day hewas called Shakar Ganj.
It is also narrated that once a traderwas taking a caravan of camels laden with sugar from Multan to Delhi. When he was passing through Ajodhan (now Pakistan), Hadrat BabaFariduddin Rehmatullah Alaihenquired casually as to what he wascarrying on his camels. The trader sarcastically replied, "It issalt." Hadrat Baba Fariduddin Rehmatullah Alaih also affirmed,"Yes, it may be salt." When the trader reached Delhi, hewas awfully perturbed to find that all his bags of sugar had turnedto salt. He immediately returned to Ajodhan and apologized beforeHadrat Baba Farid Rehmatullah Alaih. Hadrat Baba Farid RehmatullahAlaih said: "If it is sugar then it shall be sugar." Thetrader returned to Delhi and was pleased to find that the salt hadturned back to sugar by the Grace of Almighty Allah. This is howHadrat Baba Sahib Rehmatullah Alaih received the title of "Ganj-e-Shakar."
