With just a few hours to go for the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, we take a look at the best apps for iPhone and iPad so you can take the World Cup wherever you go.

    FIFA Official App
This is the official FIFA World Cup app. It has recently been updated to bring you exclusive coverage from the 2014 World Cup.
You can follow the daily live blog, which gives you up-to-the-minute coverage of everything happening at the tournament, get to see exclusive text, photo and video coverage or join the virtual Global Stadium to follow minute-by-minute action, live from all 64 games. You can also keep up to date with match alerts for line-ups, kick-off, goals, red card, half-time and full-time result when your favorite team is playing.
You can also vote for the Man of the Match in each of the 64 games, and get a chance to win the actual kick-off ball, which is quite cool. It’s probably one of the best official apps I have come across for a sports event.

    BBC Sport

BBC Sports has been one of my favorite apps to catch up on football news and analysis. It has been updated for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It gives you the ability to set match alerts for line-ups, kick-off, goals, half-time and full-time scores for your favorite teams.
You can also add your favorite teams to the Quick Links section. BBC will also be bringing live commentary on all the 64 matches throughout the tournament. If you’re in the UK, then you will get live coverage for 31 games that BBC has rights for, starting with the first match England plays against Italy on June 14.

    WatchESPN and ESPN FC

If you’re in the US, then you can catch every World Cup 2014 match live or full-length on demand on your iPhone or iPad using the WatchESPN app. However, there is a catch: you need to subscribe to a pay TV (cable, satellite or fiber) option that caries ESPN networks. The pay TV networks that work with the WatchESPN app are as follows: AT&T U-verse, Bright House Networks, Charter, Comcast XFINITY, Cox, DISH, Google Fiber, Midcontinent Communications, Optimum, Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS TV. You will be prompted to enter your TV providers user id and password to authenticate.
If you plan to watch the World Cup matches live using the WatchESPN app, then the ESPN FC companion app is a must-have. It will have full-time and in-game highlights, news, stats and schedule. It also has a Now section which is a Twitter stream made up of handpicked football pundits, managers and players.

    Onefootball Brasil

Onefootball formerly known as THE Football app is one of the best third-party apps for all things football. The German company behind the app has released an app exclusively for the World Cup called Onefootball Brasil for minute-by-minute commentary for all the 64 games from the 2014 FIFA World Cup, match schedules, results and statistics. You can also set push notifications for goals, start and stop events, match facts and reports. The app is well designed, and supports background app refresh. There is also a live ticker for matches, videos from press conferences and interviews, pre and post match news coverage for all matches. It also works as a news aggregator, picking some of the best articles from various websites big and small covering the event, which is one of my favorite features of the app.

    Other sources:

YouTube – YouTube has launched a channel called FIFATV for the World Cup where you can see video coverage of FIFA events, roundups, highlights, World Cup classics, top 10 videos and the best in football videos. You can also watch team previews. So don’t forget to add the FIFATV YouTube channel to your iPhone or iPad’s Home screen.

    Google Search –
You can also keep yourself updated with Google Search iOS app. Google recently updated the Google Search app for the Football World Cup with Google Now cards. You can tap on the cards to get details such as the scorers, match statistics, group standings and more. [Download link]

So these are some of the best apps and sources to watch and follow one of the biggest sporting event on your iOS device. If you’ve got a favorite app then please feel free to share it in the comments below.
