Maximising Small Spaces
Choosing the right furniture can make a small space cosy and inviting .
When choosing furniture, you need to keep two important things in mind - the size of the space, and the volume or ceiling height. Here, it is advisable to invest in a comfortable couch and few small pieces. But donít overdo the small pieces. It will lead to clutter.
For a big, house two or three chunky pieces of furniture are sufficient to create the magic. You can intersperse one or two small pieces with a few big ones. But it has to be balanced.
Tip: The kind of polish or finish on the furniture is also important. You can vary it - donít go all dark, otherwise the space will look very small and heavy.
Will small pieces of furniture make the room look cluttered?
Small pieces should be few, and you have to decide whether you want them to make a statement and be conversation pieces or whether you want them to just blend into the interiors. This is also based on space. When the large pieces are bold and statement like, the small pieces should just blend in.
In small spaces, however, where the emphasis is on the small pieces, select interesting ones from places like flea market, to add an element of style. They will be reasonably priced, and will look as stunning as showroom buys after some polish or finish modifications.
Tip: Ensure the small pieces donít belong to different eras and styles, else they will clamour for attention.
How to incorporate bulky furniture in limited space?
A platform bed is a great gift to modern living. But with four to six inches of wood veneer base jutting out, it can be inconvenient in small spaces and you might hurt yourself on the edges. Also, a platform bed can be difficult to get off. Invest in one only if you have enough space. On the other hand, upholstered beds are an interesting solution for cramped spaces. In some cases, you might need to make simple adjustments by moving a few things around. Otherwise, it is advisable to find multi-functional furniture like a sofa-cum-bed, which would function as a divan by day and sleeping quarters at night. It can even be placed in a den where you can enjoy the luxury of watching television while lazing about.
Tip: Size your furniture accurately Ė its more difficult to make civil changes than to make adjustments in furniture.
