3 million sacrificed animals are 15% of tannery industry
KARACHI: About three million animals were sacrificed across the country on the first day of Eid-ul-Azha and their hides are 15 per cent of the raw material obtained by the tannery industry.
According to the sources of the Pakistan Tanners Association, the tannery industry of the country gets the raw material of 20 per cent to 25 per cent through sacrifices of animals on Eid-ul-Azha every year and this year, it is hoped that five million hides will be collected by the third day of the Eid.
The sources said that this year the price of a goat’s hide is Rs200-300 while the price of a cow’s hide is Rs1,200-1,400.
However, these prices are five per cent less than the prices of the previous year and the main reason behind this decline is that the exporters received lower prices in world market.
In the previous financial year, exports of hides and tannery products were $1.4 billion which is likely to be lower this year due to global recession.
