KARACHI: The year 2008 has been a disappointing year for Pakistan in boxing also as Pakistani boxers, winning dozens of medals during the previous year, could not win a single medal in 2008.
This is not an old history when Pakistan was a prominent country in boxing. Prior to 2008, Pakistani boxers won more than 200 international medals which included gold medal in the Asian Games, silver medal in the Commonwealth Games and bronze medal in the World Championship.
These successes were achieved for the country by Mehrullah, Asghar Ali Shah and Nauman Karim.
Four years ago, Pakistani boxers made clean sweep by obtaining all the ten gold medals in the Saif Games.
Strangely, this number came down to two in the Saif Games held two years ago in Sri Lanka and two of the country’s boxers – Mehrullah and Faisal Karim – were banned for two years after their dope tests were confirmed as positive.
Five Pakistani boxers had qualified for the previous Olympic Games in Athens but this time no boxer from the country could qualify for the Beijing Olympics.
However, it is expected that the Pakistani boxers would emerge again in 2009.
