Headache that has no cure!
Headache that has no cure!
The progress in medical science has reached to a point where it has discovered the cure of many irremediable diseases but despite all the progress the cure of migraine is still not revealed...
By Asma Amin It is said that "Every thing under the sun including sun itself can cause Migraine." In this modern world where science is unveiling the new methodologies for unremitting diseases the exact mechanism of the headache is hidden. The researchers have been trying to uncover its causes but not successful so far. Why, How and When migraine hits to its patients only God knows. Hence, the mystified reason of Migraine is resulting in increased number of drug addictives specially sleeping pills addictives. The frustrated patients of this hammering pain usually take sleeping pills to evade or break the cycle of its ache. These pills take them into the valley of relief in no time that's why mostly migraine patients rely on it to get rid of their ache without knowing the fact that it can detriment their health.
Approximately 10 percent population of Karachi is Migraine patient, according to a research. Only few of them consult to neurologists while rest of the patients do not take their headache into any account and judge it as normal headache and prefer painkillers or sleeping pills for aid. It seems that in today's fast pacing world no one has time to consider a headache that has no heal. Nonetheless, those who consult to doctors do not continue their treatment and soon leave it incomplete feeling fatigued.
Unpredictable migraine strikes any time and obstructs the contentment of its patients. Usually migraine begins in the age of 15 and at the age of 45 or 50 generally its intensity is decreased. It can strike periodically, daily at a particular time, on alternative days, weekly or monthly where as some people experience it after doing stressful work. Its attack is usually strong and it can last for a few minutes to few hours even for a day or more. Chronic Migraine exasperated its victims and hinders their daily life, affecting their personal and official life. The most disappointing fact is there is no permanent cure of it. "Usually anxiety, burden of work or even when I have nothing to do, migraine attacks on me. I feel pain in my eyes when there is an immense attack," a patient of migraine said. "It can last from four hours to 24 hours in a day and I usually take a sleeping pill to get rid of it. Though, I take homeopathic treatment to heal it but it's not an everlasting cure," he further added.
Migraine has something to do with the disturbance of a specific kind of nerve system and its control over the blood vessel in the brain but what actually it is, is still unveiled. Majority of people get this headache in heritage. It is also said that genetic abnormality may also cause migraine. Some probable causes of migraine are imbalances in brain chemicals, functional changes in the trigeminal nerve system, genetic disorder, psychosomatic in nature, hormonal changes particularly in women. Nonetheless they all are indefinite which means no everlasting heal. "There's no treatment for its termination but one can only control it with the help of preventative medicines particularly prescribed to migraine patients. It can transform its severity into mild or moderate level and with continuous usage of these medicines one can hope for its termination for a long time," said Dr Aziz Sona Walla, Consultant neurologist and Director of Headache Clinic Agha Khan University Hospital. "Those who take sleeping pills to avoid migraine are doing the biggest mistake of their life as they become addicts of it," he further added. According to him there are two methods of treating migraine one is to avoid the triggers that activate migraine and the other is to use preventative medicines.
It must be kept in mind that triggers are not the causes as people usually consider. These triggers are some particular factors that may initiate its attack. Migraine patients typically have one factor specific to them but it is also possible that one may have more than one cause that stimulates migraine. Emotional commotion, lack of sleep, sleep too long or a specific sleep pattern, sunlight, bright light, weather changes, a particular weather or temperature, noise or a specific sound, quick movement may be upstairs or downstairs, abdominal disturbance like diarrhoea or constipation, eyestrain, fasting, a particular body posture, a particular odour, a particular situation or environment, certain food items like tea, coffee, beer, candy sweets, chocolate, smoking, use of narcotics, riding in a vehicle etc.
"Migraine is an episodic headache which is typically unilateral and often associated with vomiting and visual disturbance. Precipitating factors are intake of chocolate, alcohols, intake of cheese. It strives because of fluctuation of serotonin in our body. Mostly prescribed medicines for migraine are Analgesics (pain-killer), Anti-depression, and Anti-emeitics (Anti-vomit) during and attack," said Dr Sadaf Sabir, General Physician. The Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago found that scent of green apple could lessen the severity of migraine so if the patients have vomited they should drink juices to avoid dehydration or fresh apple juice to help chase the pain away. On the other hand, medicines of blood pressure and depression can also decrease its intensity only if it's properly prescribed by a neurologist. Medical history of migraine patient is also a key factor in determining what type of migraine treatments the patients can use. Unfortunately mostly patient either trusts on sleeping pills or on the medicines that prescribed by doctor long time back for a headache. They constantly use the same medicines and gradually become drug addicts.
To avoid over use of drugs there are some another preventative measures to lessen Migraine's severity. For instance taking rest in dark and quiet room, placing a piece of cool cloth on their head to feel relax, avoiding smoking, attempt to get adequate sleep every night, exercising regularly because it may help in reducing the frequency of migraines by soothing the nervous system. It must be kept in mind that heavy exercises in fact worsen symptom so one should not exceed it.
