Federer, Roddick into semis of Australia Open
MELBOURNE: World number two and three-time Australian Open champion Roger Federer stormed through the quarterfinal of the tournament on January 27 2009, losing just three games to Argentina''s Juan Martin Del Potro (6-3 6-0 6-0).
It took Federer only one hour and 20 minutes to grab the win against the world number six. Del Potro managed to put some resistance against Federer in the first set, but Federer left him no chances in the second and third, making his win the most spectacular so far at the tournament.
Federer''s words after the match showed his satisfaction and surprise of how the match had developed.
In the semi-final, Fedeere will play America''s big hope Andy Roddick, who earlier in the day qualified after defending champion Novak Djokovic retired in the fourth set.
Roddick was leading 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 6-2 2-1 when Djokovic decided to end the match because of pain in his leg, which the extremely hot weather made worse.
In the other quarterfinal draw, world number one Rafael Nadal will play world number eight, the Frenchman Gilles Simon, who beat his fellow countryman GaŽl Monfils in the fourth round.
World number 15, Spain''s Fernando Verdasco, who crashed Britain''s Andy Murray, will play last year''s finalist and current world number seven Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, who won against American James Blake in three sets (6-4, 6-4, 7-6).
