HAMBURG: British number one Andy Murray moved into the second round of the Hamburg Masters with a comfortable 6-4 6-1 victory over Russia's Dmitry Tursunov.

Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfred Tsonga staged an impressive recovery to join Murray in the second round as he saw off fellow Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 0-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-3.

But 10th seed Mikhail Youzhny is out, beaten 6-3 6-2 by Spain's Fernando Verdasco.

And Marat Safin - who had to come through qualifying - also reached the second round with a 7-5 6-2 win over Croatia's Marin Cilic.

Federer, Djokovic cruise into Hamburg semis

HAMBURG, Germany: Defending champion Roger Federer and rising star Novak Djokovic are safely through to the semi-finals of the Hamburg Masters Series after both enjoyed straight-set wins here on Friday.

Australian Open winner Djokovic was always in control against Spain's Albert Montanes as he sealed a 6-2, 6-3 win in 77 minutes and will play either world number two Rafael Nadal or Carlos Moya in Saturday's semi-final.

And world number one Federer also looked comfortable as he beat Spain's Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-3 in 80 minutes and will face either unseeded local hero Nicolas Kiefer or Italy's Andreas Seppi for a place in the final.

Verdasco, 28th in the world, had removed fifth-seed David Ferrer and tenth-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny in previous rounds but a foot injury in the second set compromised his bid to oust his Swiss opponent.

Federer has won four of the last six tournaments in Hamburg and beat left-handed clay-court king Rafael Nadal in last year's final.

The Swiss star admitted it was good experience to face left-handed Verdasco, especially if he plays Nadal again in Sunday's final

Nadal, Seppi cruise into Hamburg semis

HAMBURG: Clay-court king Rafael Nadal and Italian Andreas Seppi have reached Hamburg Masters semi-finals.

Unseeded Italian Seppi came out on top 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in a marathon three hour 13 minutes contest against home hope Nicolas Kiefer in a quarter-final where both players served for the match.

Roared on by the crowd, Kiefer bounced back from being 6-3, 5-3 down in the second set to serve for the match at 5-4 up in the third. But Seppi held his nerve to deny Kiefer the opportunity to become the first German in the semi-finals here since 1997.

Nadal saw off compatriot and 11th-seed Carlos Moya 6-1, 6-3 to set up a showdown with Djokovic in Saturday's semi-final.

The double prize of a place in Sunday's final and the world number two ranking are both at stake.

Defending champion Roger Federer, and Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic have already cruised into the Hamburg semi-finals with straight-set wins.

Federer to face Nadal in Hamburg final

    FedererRoger080514TusslesRbg - Hamburg Masters

Holder and top seed Roger Federer eased past unseeded Italian Andreas Seppi 6-3 6-1 in the Hamburg Masters on Saturday to set up a final with Spain's Rafael Nadal for the second year in a row.

Nadal, the number two seed, won a magnificent three-hour, semifinal battle with Novak Djokovic, beating the fast-rising Serb 7-5 2-6 6-2.

Djokovic has won the Australian Open and two Masters Series already this year and would have taken over Nadal's number two world ranking if he had beaten the French Open champion.

With the retractable roof at the Rothenbaum closed to keep out the rain, there was an extra buzz around the centre court and Nadal and Djokovic wowed the crowd with some awesome rallies.

The fist-pumping Mallorcan, seemingly able to chase down almost anything Djokovic threw at him, saved 15 of 19 break points against him and broke serve in the first and seventh games of the deciding set.

He sealed victory on his fifth match point when Djokovic netted an attempted drop shot at the end of an incredible final game lasting more than 15 minutes.

"It was an amazing match," Nadal told a news conference. "I am a little bit tired right now so let's see how I feel tomororow."

Hamburg is the only Masters Series title on clay that eludes Nadal and he said the slower court here took some of the sting out of his booming top-spin drives.

"I'll need to be 100% if I want to have a chance of beating Roger," he added.
