Pakistan hockey team named for WC Qualifying Round
LAHORE: An 18-member Pakistan hockey team has been announced for the World Cup Qualifying Round here on Friday.
Zeeshan Ashraf will lead the team which includes all the four players who participated the European Hockey League.
President Pakistan Hockey Federation Qasim Zia, secretary Asif Bajwa and the selection committee reviewed the performance of the players in the trials held here at the National Hockey Stadium.
President International Hockey Federation Leandro Negre was also present on this occasion.
Pakistan team consists of Zeeshan Ashraf (captain), Mohammad Imran (vice-captain), Salman Akbar, Nasir Ahmed, Sohail Abbas, Mohammad Irfan, Waseem Ahmed, Sajjad Anwar, Fareed Ahmed, Mohammad Arshad, Rehan Butt, Shakeel Abbasi, Haseem Khan, Abbas Haider, Akhtar Ali, Waqas Sharif, Shafqat Rasool and Mohammad Zubair.
After participating in the trials, the players who played hockey league in Europe, will leave for Holland on Saturday night and later join the team in France for the Qualifying Round.
The World Cup Qualifying Round will be played from October 31 to November 8 at Lille in France where Pakistan will contest with japan, France, Italy, Russia and Poland.
The victorious team will be eligible to take part in the World Cup to be held in India next year.
