This 40000 -km stretch is associated with
nearly contineous series of oceanic
trenches, volcanic arcs and plate
movements. About 90% of earth quakes
and 80% of the largest quakes occur
along the Ring of Fire. The next most active
region , which accounts for 5-6% of
earth quakes and 17% of largest earth
quakes, is the Alpide belt, which lies
along Jawa, Sumatra, Himalayas, athe
Meditirinian, and then the Atlantic
ocean. The Mid Aatlantic is the third
most prominent belt of earthquakes.
