Rana Naveed files plea against PCB penalty

LAHORE: Pakistan all-rounder Rana Naveed filed an appeal Thursday against a one-year ban from the national team and a fine of two million rupees (US$23,500).

Pakistan Cricket Board last month punished Naveed for poor performance during the team''s woeful tour of Australia earlier this year.

“What I was told by the cricket board was that my performance in the Twenty20 match against Australia was not up to the mark,'''' Naveed told reporters in the eastern city of Lahore.

“I don''t think so it''s such a big crime and I hope I will get the justice.''''

Naveed is the third player after Akmal brothers, Kamran and Umar, to file an appeal.

The PCB imposed bans and fines on seven players on the recommendations of an inquiry which investigated Pakistan''s tour of Australia. Pakistan lost the test series 3-0 and was routed 5-0 in the one-day series before losing the only Twenty20 game.

Naveed got 1-27 off his four-over bowling spell in the Twenty20 game, and with the bat, he was out stumped for just one run when Pakistan required 21 runs for victory off the last 17 deliveries.

“Performing well in all the matches is not in the hand of a player,'''' Naveed said.

The three-member appellate tribunal, which will hear all the appeals, comprises two retired Supreme Court judges, Munir Sheikh and Jamshed Ali Shah, and a former high court judge Irfan Qadir.

PCB has set Apr. 16 as the deadline for all the players to file appeals.
