Beckenbauer: 'England have gone back to kick and rush'
Beckenbauer - nicknamed "Der Kaiser" - has opened up old footballing rivalries by claiming English football has gone "backwards" and they now play "kick and rush."
World Cup winner Beckenbauer has also claimed Fabio Capello has got no chance of being successful because England are being "punished" for allowing the Premier League to be over-run with foreign players.
Beckenbauer said: "What I saw of the English in their 1-1 draw against the USA had very little to do with football. It looked to me as if the English have gone backwards into the bad old days of kick and rush.
"I am not sure if the England coach Fabio Capello can still change much there.
"The English are being punished for the fact that there are very few English players in the English Premier League clubs as they use better foreign players from all over the world."
Beckenbauer allowed himself to gloat after England were held to a disappointing draw by the USA after keeper Rob Green's howler meant that Capello now faces a battle to finish top of Group C.
Germany, meanwhile, romped to a four-goal thrashing of Australia which has marked out Joachim Low's team as potential winners.
It could also mean that Capello may be on course to face Germany in the last 16 if England fail to top Group C and Germany win Group D.
That would set up a potential rematch of the 1966 World Cup final and Beckenbauer clearly believes his German side would be favourites.
