Satya and Company were classics, Contract even with no stars headlining the movie raises your expectations as it's directed by Ram Gopal Varma, known mostly for making great films on the underworld. With a fresh star cast, does Contract go on to be yet another classic?
Characters of Contract
Adhvik Mahajan as Aman: He is a man who chooses to make himself and his life into a mission.
Prasad Purandare as Ahmad Hussain: He is the chief of a special cell Mumbai police. His right hand doesn't know what his left hand is doing. His deadpan face hides a wolf's brain.
Sumeet Nijhawan as RD: The maverick gangster who is responsible for the unholy marriage of underworld and terrorism. What makes him very dangerous is that he is still a kid at heart.
Sakshi Gulati as Iya: RD's sister who falls in love. The question is whether she loved the man or the man's name?
Zakir Hussain as Sultan: A self- proclaimed guiding light, the messiah of mayhem, and an agent of annihilation.
Kishore Kadam as Dara: Mumbai's top encounter cop. A megalomaniac who relishes killing.
Upendra Limaye as Goonga: After RD emerged the winner in the turf wars of Mumbai underworld, Goonga is forced into a watery exile. Goonga lives on a yacht to hide and survive in the desperate hope of killing RD one day.
Ram Gopal Varma showed some signs of a return to form in Sarkar Raj, but Contract could be yet another setback for the director of classic underworld movies. To his credit, RGV has tried to make every screen different, but it's the story that doesn't make any impact on the viewer. The concept is similar to Satya, company but here the underworld meets terrorism tale doesn't connect. The trademark RGV extreme close up shots of actors and camera angles is getting a bit irritating now. The climax is absurd, with the leading man finishing off all the criminals single handedly. This is quite easily Ram Gopal Varma's worst underworld movie ever, although it's the faulty script that lets the director down. Technically too the movie is below average.
Adhvik Mahajan is decent for a newcomer; he needs to world hard on his dialogue delivery. Sakshi Gulati looks great but has nothing much to do. Prasad Purandare is superb. Rest of the supporting actors is good.
Overall, with Ram Gopal Varma at the helm of an underworld flick, we expected much more than this alliance between the underworld and terrorism disaster.
