Novak Djokovic and Federer reach last 8 in Oz Open
Roger Federer again suffered a few mid-tournament hiccups as he reached the Australian Open quarter-finals by battling past Tommy Robredo 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2.
To be fair to the world No.2 Federer, Robredo never quite looked like recorded an upset victory, but Federer's 40 unforced errors will still be an area of concern. In an effort to get out of the oppressive Melbourne heat, Federer looked to go for the big shots, hitting an incredible 50 winners to Robredo's 28, but the second-set lapse will not have pleased the normally clinical Swiss.
Third seed Novak Djokovic showed the way forward with a more ruthless fourth-round win, clocking up a 6-3 6-4 6-0 score at the expense of Nicolas Almagro. Djokovic produced a more enviable 31-17 winner-error count, contrasting with No.14 seed Almagro's 15-35 statistics.
Next up for Djokovic will be Tomas Berdych, who kept alive the chances of a quarter-finals involving the top eight seeds by getting past Fernando Verdasco 6-4 6-2 6-3. Verdasco, the No.9 seed, is the highest-ranked casualty in the men's draw so far.
