Sharapova crushed in Miami final
No. 8 seed Victoria Azarenka overcame a listless Maria Sharapova to lift her second Sony Ericsson Open title.
Azarenka needed one hour and 45 minutes to take advantage of Sharapova's woes and claim a 6-1 6-4 triumph in Miami.
It was a dismal showing from former world No. 1 Sharapova, who committed 43 unforced errors and held her serve just once in the contest. Having prompted whispers she was back to her best with a dazzling run to the final, the Russian gave a reminder of the troubles that have provoked a fall down the rankings in recent years.
She rallied briefly in the final set, putting together a run of games to close the deficit, but difficulties on serve put paid to her hopes of a dramatic comeback.
The defeat means that Sharapova, whose last title came in May 2010, has now come up short in each of her last four finals.
Meanwhile, Azarenka is projected to be ranked No. 6 next week, matching her career-best.
