Race Report:

Casey Stoner got his MotoGP title defence off to an excellent start with a runaway victory under floodlights in Qatar on Sunday night.

The Australian world champion was more than five seconds clear of the pack after 22 laps under thousands of overhead lights in the Qatar desert in a race which began at midnight. He was joined on the podium by MotoGP rookie Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha) and Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda).

Pedrosa made a sensational start, leaping from eighth on the grid to take the hole shot into the first corner, followed by Texan Colin Edwards (Yamaha Tech 3), former Superbike world champion James Toseland on the second Tech 3 machine, Lorenzo, Stoner and Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha).

Rossi got past Stoner on the first lap into fifth place after the Australian dropped from fourth position to sixth off the line.

On the second lap, Toseland bumped and barged his way through on Lorenzo into second place, while Rossi moved up to third. While Pedrosa cleared off into the middle distance, the next four bikes came down the main straight line abreast as the order was decided by who would brake last into the first corner.

On lap 3, Pedrosa set the fastest lap time of 1'56.270, while Stoner moved up to third behind Rossi who moved the bar to 1'55.738 on lap 4 as he reeled in Pedrosa.

On the fifth tour it was Andrea Dovizioso's turn to set the fastest time of 1'55.559 on his JIR Honda. With five laps gone, the top five bikes were covered by just two seconds as Rossi caught Pedrosa and surged past him into the lead, with the pair followed by Lorenzo, Stoner, Dovizioso, Toseland, Edwards and Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki).

Lorenzo made a move on Pedrosa into second place on lap 6, followed by Stoner who jumped Pedrosa while he was unsettled. Stoner then powered past Lorenzo to take up station behind race leader Rossi.

Two laps later the Australian hit the front and never looked back. But Rossi was losing pace and was being caught by the pack behind. Lorenzo was the first to get past his team mate, while further down the field, Chris Vermeulen (Rizla Suzuki) was having problems with his front tyre. He returned to the pits where the wheel was changed and he rejoined the race in last place.

With a clear track ahead of him, Stoner reeled off a series of ever-faster laps times: 1'55.489, 1'55.389 and a 1'55.153 on lap 14.

Meanwhile, Pedrosa got past Rossi to reclaim his second place while Alex de Angelis became the only 'casualty' when he crashed his Gresini Honda.

Dovizioso was next to target seven-times former world champion Valentino Rossi, getting past on Lap 19 and demoting the Italian to fourth place. Rossi fought back and regained the place before the pair began a thrilling battle on the final lap for fourth place. The pair took and retook the position from each other as James Toseland edged ever closer from a couple of bike lengths back. As they came to the line it was Dovizioso who was ahead, followed just 17/1000th sec later by Rossi with Toseland half a second back.

The historical first race ever under overhead lighting in the premier motorcycle class delivered a superb race in the Qatari desert and was a resounding success.

The next race (under sunshine!) will be the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez on 30 March.
